Class 12/12, Exam Review Day

Scale is an increasingly important concept in geography because of globalization, which is a force or process that involves the entire world and results in making something worldwide in scope. Globalization means that the scale of the world is shrinking—not literally in size, of course, but in the ability of a person, object, or idea to interact with a person, object, or idea in another place.
Essay 1:
Country B- the aren't enough people working in productive jobs, declining population

Essay 2: Globalization can be understood as the increasing connections of different parts and people around the world. Globalization results in the expansion, do this one

Essay 3: Consider our studies of immigration, push and pull forces, our analysis of CIA World Factbook statistics, and the current state of our nation. Then, thoughtfully answer these questions.
Should millions of undocumented immigrants with no criminal record be allowed to live and work

Class 12/8, Party

Today in class we through Mr. Schick his birthday party! Today, the day I'm typing this, December 9th, is his actual birthday so, HAPPY BIRTHDAY MR. SCHICK!!!!!!!! Mr. Schick actually had cookies for us and then we had the idea of making him a cake so we had the cake and the cookies which was really nice. Owen made the cake and it was really good. I only had the vanilla side but it was very good. 10/10 recommend, it was also funfetti which was an added bonus. Then Sydney, Ellie, Giovanna, and Maddy put on a performance of the Mean Girls dance which was rather entertaining. So overall it was a pretty good class. Also Mr. Schick came up with a great joke, "I'm on a seefood diet, I see food and I eat it.". Then we finished the class by trying to talk about what was going to be on the exam but it got cut short by the bell.

Class 12/7, Sub and Exam Studying

Today in class we had sub and we were allowed to make quizlets and prepare for our midterm. Also the most exciting news is that we don't have a test on Monday anymore. I used my notes in my notebook to create a quizlet during the class period.  I also used Mr. Schick's blog to get an idea of what to study.
Notes:

  • A map is a scale model of the real world, made small enough to work with on a desk or computer. It can be a hasty here’s-how to-get-to-the-party sketch, an elaborate work of art, or a precise computer-generated product. A map serves two purposes: It is a tool for storing reference material and a tool for communicating geographic information. As a reference tool. A map helps us to find the shortest route between two places and to avoid getting lost along the way. We consult maps to learn where in the world something is found, especially in relation to a place we know, such as a town, body of water, or highway. The maps in an atlas or a road map are especially useful for this purpose.
  • The Geographic grid is a system of imaginary arcs drawn in a grid pattern on Earth’s surface

Class 12/6, Exam Overview

Today in class we mostly just went over things we needed to know for the exam. We also went over the pop quiz we took the other day. Some of the people in class were very upset that this "comprehension check" we had counted for a grade even though they always count but they're just called pop quizzes. After the debate over why this quiz should count was over we started to talk about the exam. Mr. Schick said that we will be taking the exam for Human Geo in his room and that it will be the second exam on day one. Also that we will get a review packet on Friday. He said there will be a hundred multiple choice questions and two essays. Each multiple choice question will be worth half a point while the essays are worth 25. The first essay will be on population pyramids and the second essay we will pick one of the questions he gives us to answer. He also said that we shouldn't rush through our exams because it won't help us.

Class 12/4, Summing Up Demographics

Today in class WE STILL DID NOT HAVE FOOD. But we finished going over demographics and we took a "comprehension check" which I don't know if is just a cover up name for a pop quiz?? I'm not even sure anymore what to expect.
Notes:

  • Demographic Transitionrefers to the transition from high birth and death rates to lower birth and death rates as a country or region develops from a pre-industrial to an industrialized economic system. Most developed countries have completed the demographic transition and have low birth rates; most developing countries are in the process of this transition. The major (relative) exceptions are some poor countries, mainly in sub-Saharan Africa and some Middle Eastern countries, which are poor or affected by government policy or civil strife, notably, Pakistan, Palestinian territories, Yemen, and Afghanistan. The model will track population changes that occur as a country begins to develop or industrialize. The model works from pre-industrial in stage 1, through development in stages 2 and 3, to post industrial stage 4. It allows us to compare where countries currently are in the transition to countries that have already gone through those changes which effectively can tell us what needs to change.
  • The more developed countries (core countries) are the industrialized capitalist countries on which developing countries (Semi-Periphery and Periphery) depend. Core countries control and benefit from the global market. They are usually recognized as wealthy nations with a wide variety of resources and are in a favorable location compared to other states. They have strong state institutions, a powerful military and powerful global political alliances.

Class 12/1, Demographics

Today's class was very interesting. It started out on an awkward note plus we also didn't have food. This just made matters worse. Then we started to discuss demographics and the chart below. After we talked about it Chase asked the same exact thing I was thinking which was what happens after the fifth stage on the chart. I would assume that it varies for each individual country based what is specifically needed to keep their economy thriving. But then class took a turn for the worse. I am pretty sure that Mr. Schick thinks that we are all terrible people when in reality I think there was a misunderstanding of what we being said. I hope that this misunderstanding is over with by the time we have class Monday. We will see I guess.
Notes:

  • Demographic Transition Model-measures death rate, birth rate, and total population of a country
  • Demographics- different ways of measuring people
